After 33 years of the "Anfal Campaign" that the former regime carried out against the Iraqi Kurds, the Peshmerga forces are still unable to defend them, in addition to internal division, mismanagement and corruption, according to a report published on the American website, The National Interest.
The report indicates the poor condition of these forces that were established to liberate the Kurds by failing to defend the Yazidis against ISIS in 2014, and says that the Kurdistan region almost collapsed in the post-ISIS phase without the intervention of the international coalition forces, and the region became "more divided and weak than ever Gone, "and although it maintains huge security forces, it is unable to protect its residents and lands .

About 180,000 Kurds were killed in the "Anfal campaign" that targeted the Iraqi Kurds at the end of the eighties, in which Saddam Hussein used chemical gas and saw villages wiped out and thousands of Kurds were displaced .
In 2007 an Iraqi court sentenced Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as "Chemical Ali," for his role in directing the campaign, and he was executed by hanging in 2010 .
    Repeated failure '
The National Interest report says that in addition to concentration camps, death squads, weapons of mass destruction, indiscriminate destruction and demolition of water resources, about six thousand Peshmerga fighters were unable to stand up to the campaign, and nearly all of them were expelled from the region .

"And just like the failure of the Peshmerga in the 1980s, its more modern, financed and equipped version failed to prevent the genocide of Yezidis in 2014 and the loss of territory in recent years," according to the report .
ISIS launched its attack on the heart of the Yazidi community at the foot of Mount Sinjar, in August 2014, and the militants killed hundreds and kidnapped 6,417 people, more than half of them women and girls. After that, most of the captured adult men were killed .
An Amnesty International report last week stated that many Yezidi genocide survivors need psychological help that they do not receive .
The Iraqi Kurdistan Region forces were unable to withstand hundreds of ISIS militants when they were at the gates of Erbil, and about a quarter of the city was evacuated before the international coalition against ISIS rescued the city .
In 2017, when Iraqi forces captured the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, the Peshmerga forces were defeated as they attempted to fight against the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), and the city fell in less than two hours .
The Kurdistan Regional Forces are subject to the authority of the Ministry of Peshmerga, but the Ministry is not responsible for it, and it is "effectively subordinated" to the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, "which leaves the ministry without authority. The two parties are divided, each cooperating with different regional and global powers," according to the report .
Most of the attempts to unify these forces fail, according to the report, due to the lack of trust between the two Kurdish political systems, and despite the unification of some brigades under the supervision of the coalition forces, their number is small compared to the rest of the force .
The report indicates that the Peshmerga forces are equipped with only light weapons, most of which are rusty, and Chinese-made and used Kalashnikov rifles despite the huge budgets for the purchase of weapons, as well as they do not have armor or air force. Existentialism for most of its history . "
The capacity of these forces is deteriorating mainly for internal reasons, including low salaries for soldiers, some of whom receive them only every four to six times a year .
A large part of the budget allocated to the peshmerga is transferred to the special paramilitary forces belonging to the ruling clans and political blocs, which only work to secure the property and members of the two major and smaller parties allied with them .
The analysis says: "The failure of military security in the Kurdistan region of Iraq repeatedly, which may lead to the undermining of most political, economic and social achievements again and again ."
He notes that the Peshmerga forces are currently working to "protect a Kurdish regime from the other within the region," while "corruption and neglect left the army incapable of fending off various threats coming from the Middle East ."
