Markets are in recession. Citizens indifferent to the holiday: curfews and the epidemic are not anxious

Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
For the second year in a row, Eid al-Fitr, which is the third holiday, comes in light of an atmosphere of anxiety and economic depression as a result of the Corona virus. And there is a clear indifference to the lives of citizens, despite the approaching Eid, by not interacting with its airspace, indicating that they are complaining about the banning measures, which they described as "cruel".
Citizen Muhammad Jumaa said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the holiday atmosphere has become almost non-existent in light of the continuing outbreak of Corona virus and the imposition of a harsh curfew that tightened the screws on our movement."
The Cabinet approved the recommendation of the Supreme Committee for Health and National Safety to impose a comprehensive curfew in the country for a period of 10 days, from May 12 to May 22 to limit the spread of the Corona pandemic and apply preventive measures through social distancing and other preventive conditions, especially after it The Ministry of Health recently recorded a significant increase in the number of injuries throughout the country.
The curfew decision includes closing malls, restaurants, cafeterias, cafes, cinemas, parks, event halls, weddings, swimming pools, sports halls, etc., as well as prohibiting the holding of human gatherings in all their forms, according to a Cabinet statement.
"We did not taste the joy of the last Eid because of social distancing and the lack of visiting friends and relatives," Jumaa added, adding, "I was hoping that the current holiday would be a breakthrough for Iraq and the whole world."
Jumaa points out that “the economic repercussions and psychological pressure that accompanied Corona made the eagerness to receive the Eid for many social groups.” In turn, Mortada Zaidan - the owner of men's clothing - says, "The holiday atmosphere is losing its flavor year after year."
Zaidan added in an interview with Al-Mada: “The demand for buying clothes on holidays has decreased since ISIS entered Iraq in 2014,” indicating that “unemployment, lack of work opportunities and economic crises have increased the burden on young people and burdened their lives.”
Zidan points out that “just before Eid al-Fitr arrives every year and despite the citizens’ difficult financial conditions, we notice an active movement in the market, especially the purchase of Eid sweets and the purchase of Eid clothes and other preparations, but last year and this year things have become completely different due to the Corona pandemic. ” .
For his part, Fadel Naseer - the owner of the children's clothing store - says, "The markets have become inactive due to the curfew and the Corona virus, except for some very necessary needs for citizens, in light of the unwillingness to buy and provide income for basic needs."
Naseer added in an interview with Al-Mada that "families who have more than one child have become difficult to buy clothes because of the economic situation that the citizen is going through." Naseer points out that “the citizen’s impact on the economic situation is due to its impact on us shopkeepers,” calling on the government to “ease the embargo measures and take into account the citizens, by providing social welfare salaries or other alternatives for the affected and poor classes.”
Yesterday, Tuesday, the Ministry of Health recorded 5,287 new infections and 34 deaths from Corona virus throughout the country, during the past 24 hours.
The ministry stated in a statement that (Al-Mada) received a copy of it that it “recorded 5,287 infections, bringing the total number of infections to 11,22914 infections, since the virus began spreading in Iraq.
The Ministry also recorded 34 new deaths due to Corona during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 15,834 cases. While the cases of recovery from the virus reached 6,561 cases of recovery throughout Iraq, bringing the number of people who have recovered from Corona virus to 1018,167 people so far.
The ministry stated in the statement that the number of people who received the anti-corona vaccine during the past 24 hours was 21,403, bringing the total number of people who received the vaccine to 453,361 people.
In conjunction with this, the Public Health Department confirmed that Iraq cannot detect the Indian strain after two months or less, adding that it does not know the effectiveness of the vaccine against this strain, of the Corona virus. The director of public health at the ministry, Riyadh Abdul-Amir Al-Halfi, said, "Iraq cannot detect the Indian ancestry until after work in the virus genetic analysis laboratory is completed."
And work on this laboratory is nearing completion, according to Al-Halfi, adding that there is a training phase and then Iraq will have "the ability to genetic analysis, and that within two months or less."
