{Local: Al Furat News} With the country's population continuing to rise, exceeding the 40 million barrier, the Ministry of Planning confirmed the absence of a special policy for birth control in Iraq, while revealing efforts to invest human resources in economic development.
The population of Iraq is increasing annually at a rate of 850,000 to one million people, according to official statistics. In 1979, the population reached 12.12 million, while it rose to 22 million in 1997.
Ministry spokesman Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi said, "The ministry has not adopted any policy on birth control in the country because this issue faces many problems if it is implemented or legislated."
He added, "The ministry is counting on societal awareness in this regard in order to invest the annual increase in a positive aspect to achieve development and not make it a burden on the country."
And he indicated that "countries that have moved towards birth control policies are facing problems and there has become a gap in those societies, as they suffer from a lack of youthful capabilities capable of working, and they have become aging and aging societies, as they are described."
It is noteworthy that population policies are directly related to human development, through the development of skills according to a clear economic vision, especially as the country is witnessing population increases that are not commensurate with the volume of resources with the expansion of the youth segment among the population segments, which should be transformed into a lever and a driving force for development.
Al-Hindawi pointed out that "the country is witnessing an annual population expansion, but it was not the same size increase nearly a decade ago, but it remained high compared to other countries."
He pointed out that "the population reached 40 million and 150 thousand during the year 2020, as it witnessed an increase compared to the previous year."
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Planning is working on preparing the national document for population policies in Iraq and following up on its implementation in order to support the implementation of censuses and population surveys to obtain accurate information and the latest data.
