The Ministry of Transport revealed, on Saturday, that 70 percent of railways have been worn out and destroyed as a result of the security situation and abuses over the past years.
The director of the General Company for Railways, Talib Al-Husseini, said in an interview seen by "Al-Iqtisad News", that "the length of the railways in the country is two thousand kilometers, 60 to 70 percent of them are old and dilapidated as a result of abuses and the deterioration of the security situation in some governorates over the past years."
Al-Husseini added, “The reconstruction and rehabilitation of railways needs financial allocations, because what is being allocated to the Ministry of Transport of funds is insufficient,” noting that “the engineering and technical staff in the southern and central regions have embarked on a wide campaign to remove abuses and irregular crossings on the railways for the purpose of ensuring their smooth flow.” train movement.
Al-Husseini stressed, “The resumption of work on a railway starting from Al-Samoud station in Basra Governorate to berth 27 in the northern port of Umm Qasr. The work included spreading concrete beams, laying and welding lines, and then brushing the arbitration stone, and it will be completed within the period specified by the company.”
