Shafaq News/ The former head of the US diplomatic mission in Iraq, Robert Ford, commented today, Wednesday, on the trial of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, which came as a result of the United States and its allies' invasion of the country under the pretext of searching for weapons of mass destruction.

These US statements come ahead of the fifteenth anniversary of the execution of the former Iraqi president.

The former US ambassador to Baghdad, Robert Ford, said, in statements to the Russian "Novosti" agency, that the trial of Saddam Hussein "was not without transgressions," adding

"Of course, the trial itself was not without problems. Some lawyers were killed and that was a terrible thing. During the judicial proceedings, the prosecution sometimes presented evidence without allowing the defense to see it first, so that this new evidence surprised the defense party."

The US diplomat confirmed that the prosecution had found a large number of documents signed by Saddam Hussein or other defendants in the same case, which were proving their involvement in the mass killings, including the "Anfal" operation directed against the Kurds.

Ford added: "There were no doubts about the guilt of Saddam and the other defendants in the crimes, but there is no doubt that the trial itself was not perfect."

In July 2004, the first session of Saddam Hussein's trial was held, which ended on November 5, 2006, with the death sentence issued against him by hanging.

Saddam Hussein was executed on December 30, 2006, three years after his arrest near his hometown of Tikrit.
