Today, Sunday, representatives of the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government discussed economic growth and job creation prospects with the European Union and the German embassy.
And according to a statement by the European Union, which received a copy of the press release, “Representatives from all parties stressed the responsibility to act in light of the difficult economic situation that Iraqis are experiencing after the outbreak of the epidemic, and they evaluated the tangible and real success of cooperation between Iraq, Germany and the European Union.”
He added that "in Baghdad, June 1, 2022, the governmental bodies in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, namely the offices of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister and the ministries of planning, discussed the progress made in implementing economic reforms and creating sustainable job opportunities for Iraqis, who met as members of the Steering Committee of a development project The Private Sector and Employment Promotion ( PSD ), jointly commissioned by the German government and the European Union, with a total budget of 53 million euros, and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation ( GIZ ).
And he indicated that "after discussing the challenges of the current economic situation and its consequences for employment prospects and business growth in Iraq, the participants reviewed the achievements of the project to develop the private sector and enhance employment in general. The project led to the obtaining of 1,830 young people in Baghdad, Basra, Nineveh, Diyala, Diwaniyah and Erbil to job opportunities." . The beneficiaries were trained on topics such as entrepreneurial knowledge and specific cutting skills (marketing, product manufacturing, food processing…etc).”
And he indicated that “the topics were selected with government partners based on the needs of the labor market. To ensure the sustainability of this approach, the project trained staff from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs to conduct labor market assessments in sectors with high job-creating potential.”
In addition, the statement indicated that “the project supported organizational structures such as chambers of commerce and industry, and after the initial training procedures, the chambers provided business advice to more than 800 micro, small and medium companies, to help them expand their business or obtain loans, in addition to that. The project trained more than 250 employees of the Ministry of Planning, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as the Federal Integrity Commission, in various topics.
He continued, "The topics included modern statistical tools for economic policy, development of professional skills for job seekers, provision of career guidance for young graduates and job seekers, and in the Kurdistan region, the project provided advice to the government on major reforms in areas such as rural development and economic diversification, with the creation of platforms Dialogue between the public and private sectors, and the project has also established ways to identify and resolve challenges for small and medium-sized companies and enhance the capacity of companies to actively participate in policy-making processes.”
According to the statement, "Project representatives highlighted the critical role and strong commitment of government partners, as well as other cooperating institutions - including business chambers and associations, government training centers, universities and non-governmental partners - in achieving these results."
Maher Johan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning for Technical Affairs, expressed his “gratitude for the support provided by the German government and the European Union,” and renewed “the Iraqi side’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the project’s achievements,” saying, “With the great efforts of all partners in implementing this project, we have already achieved a large number of results.” In concrete terms, it is the duty of the Iraqi government to ensure that our efforts continue to provide sustainable solutions to the challenges facing the private sector in Iraq.”
Kanar Fadel Hedayat, Director General of Development Cooperation and Coordination at the Ministry of Planning in the Kurdistan Regional Government, praised the “successful cooperation and emphasized the great importance of the project,” adding that “the development of the private sector is one of the main priorities of the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government,” adding that “ Given the large number of unemployed youth, we need to work together to ensure that private sector jobs are a viable option.”
As for Nils Schott, representative of the German embassy, he highlighted the "importance of the German cooperation project in Iraq." He said, “The strong commitment of our government partners, as is evident from the quality of our discussions in the Steering Committee, is once again a sign that the support that Germany provides through the PSD project is making a beneficial contribution to our partners in Iraq and with tangible results, and this is important to us, because Iraq and since 2004 was a major priority for German Cooperation and currently represents the largest profile of the German International Cooperation Agency ( GIZ ); One of the German agencies implementing technical cooperation projects on our behalf.”
For her part, Barbara Egger, Head of Cooperation for Iraq at the European Union Commission, congratulated the project and its partners on the recent achievements. She stated that "the European Union will combine activities within the framework of the Team Europe initiative to avoid duplication of efforts and save resources." Expand cooperation through joint projects, thus facilitating coordination with our Iraqi partners.”
The German Agency for International Cooperation ( GIZ ) highlighted "many activities that take into account challenges such as climate change and the transition to a green economy. Therefore, the project works directly with its partners on possible solutions and the development of innovative business ideas."
Christoph Feldkotter, Country Director of GIZ , highlighted that "especially in the areas of photovoltaic energy and sustainable agriculture, steps have been taken to highlight the hidden potential in the markets and support small and medium enterprises in adopting innovative ideas in value chains."
