    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

The issue of dealing with dates in Iraq by the government is one of the signs of government neglect and poor planning towards one of the most important strategic crops, which is the icon of Iraq, which was a source of dates for all countries in the region and a large number of countries in the world because of its large numbers of palms years ago.
Although the dates sector witnessed a partial recovery in the last two years and the return of the number of palm trees to rise to 19 million palm trees in 2020, a number equivalent to only 59% of what Iraq had of palms in the fifties, where the number of palms reached more than 32 million palm trees, before declining Number of palm trees to reach only 15 million palm trees in 2012.
Despite this, the government did not revive this sector until it was buying dates from farmers at 150,000 dinars per ton to go as animal feed, amid the absence of stores capable of preserving the product, as well as a complete absence of good packaging factories and manufacturing industries that contribute to raising the marketing process and exporting the product.

Karbala Agriculture Director, Mahdi Hassan al-Janabi, confirmed that the “population sprawl” began to reduce palms and dates annually, by encroaching on orchards, while suggesting the need for the government to deal with dates as it deals with wheat, that is, it buys them from farmers and markets them.
Al-Janabi said that "Karbala dates are among the most famous at the governorate level, and their annual production reaches 165,000 tons annually," noting that "the annual production began to decrease due to the encroachment on orchards from residential areas, especially from the Al-Hussainiya area."
Al-Janabi pointed out that "the farmer complains about the lack of government interest in the issue of marketing dates, which calls for the intervention of the state and the relevant ministries, such as trade in the matter."
The local official pointed out that "the farmer also needs the support of the Ministry of Agriculture to support the outputs, that is, to receive dates from the farmer and adopt the process of marketing them, as happens with the strategic crop, that is, wheat."

However, this proposal was actually abandoned by the Ministry of Agriculture two years ago and considered it a “failure”, as the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed at the time that it “prevented the General Company for the Marketing of Dates from receiving dates from farmers, because the company’s stores are not fit to receive the crop, as the company was granting The farmer is 200 thousand dinars per ton, that is, he spends 250 billion to buy dates, which will eventually be turned into animal feed.
However, the ministry resorted to investors buying dates from the farmer, packing them and exporting them abroad, and thus the price of dates rose from 200 thousand dinars, to more than 700 thousand dinars per ton, meaning that Iraq’s production ready for export, which amounts to nearly 800,000 tons annually, is able to bring Approximately 600 billion Iraqi dinars, or about half a billion dollars annually.

Instead of the Ministry of Agriculture or Commerce investing in this matter, buying the date crop from the farmer at a certain price in order to export it and take advantage of the money that it can generate, but the state leaves this task to the investors, and loses nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in hard currency that could be enter into the state treasury.
