The Iranian ambassador to Kuwait, Mohammad Irani, confirmed that the Iranian committees and their Saudi counterparts are ready to resume negotiations between the two countries as soon as the appropriate ground is prepared in Iraq, which will end with a meeting that brings together the foreign ministers of the two countries.
And Irani indicated that "the sixth round of negotiations between Iran and Saudi Arabia was supposed to take place last month in Iraq, which would naturally have culminated in a meeting between Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdullahian, with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan, immediately after the end of the round; If invited by the host country for consultations.
On Tuesday, Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai quoted an Iranian as saying: "After the recent events in Iraq, it is natural to wait until the host country is ready to host and manage negotiations."
He made it clear that the issue of resuming the dialogue through the sixth round is agreed upon, but awaiting the preparation of the appropriate ground for talks in Iraq.
And he added, "Iranian officials are very optimistic about the progress of the talks, but we have to wait for the Iraqi call for the two parties to resume the sixth round after the current events in Iraq end."
Baghdad has hosted direct negotiations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, since April 2021, but it has not achieved tangible progress on the ground. The fifth round of these negotiations took place last March, and achieved positive results.
The past few weeks have witnessed diplomatic language closer to conciliation on the part of Iranian officials with Saudi Arabia.
Tehran accepted Riyadh's request for a direct meeting, and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein announced, on July 23, 2022, his country's intention to host a public meeting between the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran soon.
Diplomatic relations were severed between the two sides, in early January 2016, after protesters stormed the Saudi consulate in Iran.
