Baghdad is approaching the launch of Washington-Tehran negotiations and a sixth round with Saudi Arabia

Baghdad / Tamim Al-Hassan
Political sources suggest that Baghdad will start serious steps in mediation between Tehran and Washington, which is one of the reasons for Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian's visit to the Iraqi capital yesterday, in a visit that will last for more than a day. The visit comes less than 24 hours after the government announced the start of gas production for the first time, which may reduce Iraq's dependence on Iranian gas.
Iraq imports more than $10 billion in gas and electricity from Iran, while it pays it through a third country.
It seems that Abdullahian's presence, which was previously planned, came after the end of the Iraq negotiations in Washington, which drew new relations between the two "friendly" countries, as described by a previous statement of the ruling coalition.
Iran faces escalating Western sanctions because of its domestic policy and accusations of supporting tensions in the region. It is also the most affected by Washington's restrictions on the movement of the dollar in Iraq. It was remarkable, on the eve of the Iranian foreign minister's arrival in Baghdad, that former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi appeared for the first time publicly after the end of his rule last year, while he was meeting with officials in Tehran.
Information was leaked that Al-Kazemi's meeting - whose photos were published on Iranian sites and near the Iraqi flag, which often happens in official visits - may be linked to the dialogues with Saudi Arabia. Al-Kazemi, who left power last October, is considered the godfather of negotiations between Tehran and Riyadh, when during his rule he held 5 rounds of dialogue between the two parties. Recently, Saudi Arabia said that preparations for the sixth round will be close, while Iraq will host today, Thursday, the work of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union for two days. On the other hand, other reports said that the visit might be about Al-Kazemi presenting his testimony regarding the airport incident in which the deputy head of the crowd, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, and the commander of the Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, were killed, and Iraqi factions loyal to Tehran had accused the former prime minister of the accident.
Iranian concern
In addition, informed political sources indicated in an interview with (Al-Mada) that “the arrival of the Foreign Minister is within the arrangements for the resumption of dialogues between Tehran and Washington, which are sponsored by Baghdad.” The sources, who asked not to be identified, also indicate that in exchange for this, “Tehran is concerned about the Iraqi negotiations with the United States regarding the dollar, and the possibility of a decline in Iraq’s gas import.”
The sources believe that "Iraq's start of gas production is a measure supported by Washington as part of the policy of suffocating Iran."
Yesterday, Basem Al-Awadi, a government spokesman, said that Iraq's gas production "will reduce spending on importing gas and then exporting later to enhance the sources of the economy and provide huge funds for budgets."
A day before Abdullahian's arrival, Prime Minister Muhammad al-Sudani had announced that Iraq would start producing gas for the first time, expecting Iraq to reach self-sufficiency in gas within 3 years.
According to the press conference held by Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein with his Iranian counterpart in Baghdad, the two sides discussed several files, including "the results of the visit to Washington related to the Iranian side." Hussein noted, according to what was reported by the official agency, that "reaching understandings between Iran and America is important for Iraq." The Iraqi foreign minister had previously said that he had received a phone call from Lahian while he was in Washington last week.
Hussein revealed in a press interview that after the call, he met Robert Malley, the official responsible for the Iranian negotiation file in America, and the "nuclear file" was discussed.
During the interview that took place after the end of the negotiations with Washington, the foreign minister confirmed that Iraq buys gas and electricity from Iran for $11 billion, and the payment is to be made through a third country.
And between Hussein: "For example, Iran buys goods from Turkmenistan, and we pay for them." Iranian media had indicated that during the phone call revealed by the foreign minister with Abdullahian during the former's stay in Washington, during which he presented an official invitation to the Iranian minister to visit Baghdad. It is assumed that Abdullahian's visit to Baghdad will last for two days, where he is expected to meet with the Prime Minister and Parliament, the President of the Judicial Council, and National Security Adviser Qassem Al-Araji.
Al-Araji had met on the eve of Allahian's arrival in Baghdad with the US ambassador to Iraq, Elena Romanowski. Among what Al-Araji discussed with the ambassador, according to a statement by the first office, was the “strategic framework agreement” and “strengthening strategic relations between Iraq and the United States.”
Find the solution
In the meantime, Ghazi Faisal, head of the Center for Political Studies, considered the visit of the Iranian foreign minister to Baghdad as Iran's attempt to get out of the sanctions ring. Faisal, head of the Iraqi Center for Strategic Studies, said in an interview with (Al-Mada): “The success of the Iraqi delegation in the Washington talks in cutting off the dollar’s access to Iran, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Syrian regime certainly worried Tehran.”
He added, "Iran faces severe sanctions due to the prosecution of protesters at home, arrests, torture and executions. It is also accused of spreading chaos in Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and Syria."
Faisal pointed out that "the United States considers Iran the primary sponsor of terrorism," noting that Abdullahian's visit "may be an attempt to closely acquaint Iran with the details of the Washington talks."
And the researcher in political affairs confirmed that "Iraq may be a mediating party in taking priority pledges from Tehran not to interfere in sovereign affairs in the region and to stop the policy of exporting the ideology of the Wali al-Faqih through the Revolutionary Guards."
