When roaming in the city of Baghdad, specifically in the old areas of it, you will find dozens, or perhaps hundreds, of dilapidated buildings that are about to fall due to lack of maintenance and neglect by their owners, or the government’s lack of serious follow-up to these buildings over the past period.
The camera of Shafaq News Agency roamed around the capital after the incident of the medical laboratory building in Al-Wathiq Square area, and monitored a large number of these “dilapidated” buildings, specifically in the approaches to Al-Sinak, Al-Tahrir and Al-Saadoun areas.
The agency's camera also monitored the transformation of a large part of these buildings inside the branches into warehouses and factories, most of which are over 60 years old without maintenance.
In this regard, Brigadier General Jawdat Abd al-Rahman, Director of Media of the Civil Defense Directorate, said in an interview, “The census and follow-up of partially or completely collapsing buildings is the responsibility of other departments, such as the Municipality of Baghdad or municipal departments.”
Brigadier General Jawdat added, "The Civil Defense Directorate, for its part, and after the collapse of the National Laboratory building in Karrada, took the initiative to inventory and count these buildings in Baghdad and the provinces. The file was deposited with the Ministry of Interior, through which the concerned authorities will be approached because our work is related to safety measures."
And the Director of Civil Defense Media explained that “our work was to ensure the existence of these buildings, and indeed we found them through the efforts and initiative of our directorate so that a catastrophe does not occur with a new collapse and there are deaths or large losses,” noting that “when the file arrives at the concerned departments, work according to the legal procedures officially in force.” .
Brigadier General Jawdat continued, "The Directorate has completed what it is required to do, and the other departments must complete what it has to do in this aspect, according to the law that it is working on."
Baghdad and a number of provinces witnessed building collapses, the most prominent of which was the National Laboratory building in the Al-Wathiq Square area in the center of the capital, Baghdad, which claimed the lives of a number of innocent citizens, while there is no clear control over the construction of buildings or new additions to them or follow-up and maintenance, which threatens the lives of citizens in the first place.
