The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed, on Monday, its approach to the Ministry of Water Resources to increase agricultural areas within the winter plan, indicating that the rains revived hopes of achieving high rates of self-sufficiency in the wheat and barley crops.
"The agricultural plan included the cultivation of about 7 million dunams during the current season, most of which are allocated to wheat and barley," said ministry spokesman Hamid al-Nayef, in a press statement.
"The recent rains have raised hopes for an increase in cultivated areas, as well as an increase in the production of strategic crops such as wheat and barley," he added.
He pointed out that "the first wave of rain secured irrigation for the fields, and the Ministry of Water Resources was approached regarding increasing agricultural areas during the current season, especially in the south, because water is not stored after rain, unlike the northern regions."
