On Tuesday, the head of the Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshes Committee, Thaer Makhaif, expressed his hope that “the prime minister’s measures regarding the water scarcity file will yield positive results, especially since there have been extensive discussions in this regard with Iran.”
"The government will form a negotiating delegation to return Iraq's water share from Iran, while the Sudanese will hold talks with Turkey regarding Iraqi water shares from the Tigris and Euphrates and the rest of their tributaries," Makhaif said in a press statement.
Scary revealed, “There is a forced and deliberate cutting of these quotas by neighboring countries, contrary to international agreements regarding the riparian countries, and yet today we are living in a wet and abundant winter, something we have seen through the reports of the Ministry of Resources regarding the completion of the first irrigation of winter crops, in addition to the launch of compensation from the Ministry Agriculture for some of those affected by the floods in 2018.
Pointing out that “the current government is serious about the water crisis file, as the President of the Republic previously held the position of Minister of Water Resources and has an integrated vision on this water file and its management after the unjust cuts by Turkey and Iran.”
Meanwhile, Makhaif called on the Ministry of Water Resources to present a “clear and purposeful plan for the purpose of reducing water losses through projects that limit the delivery of water to liquefaction stations and the irrigation of cultivated areas.”
