Kurdistan parties do not agree on an electoral system

The political blocs in the Kurdistan region hope that all parties will reach a unified and agreed political vision through which the election law and the commission will be amended to proceed to holding elections, according to the date 11/18/2023, however, the path of negotiations is still long and difficult.
A member of the Democratic Party, Ashwaq Al-Jaf, said: "The president of the region has set the date for the elections, but we need to activate the commission and amend the current election law. Will this law be held, or will we resort to the multiple constituencies," noting that "the KDP insists on holding elections during this time." General, the postponement is not in favor of the political process in the Kurdistan region.
Al-Jaf called for holding elections to preserve political legitimacy in the region through democratic elections.
In turn, the spokesman for the Kurdistan Justice Group, Muhammad Hakim, said that "boycotting the elections is still an option."
Karim added, in an interview with "Al-Sabah", that "the region's presidency set the election day without the parties reaching a formula to amend the current law, and they consulted us on the matter, and we saw that the amendment takes place before the selection."
While former MP Kawa Muhammad said, "The problem lies in the fact that the relationship between the Union and the Democratic Party is not at the level required for them to agree on preparing the legal, political and technical ground for the region's elections."

Muhammad explained to "Al-Sabah" that "there are unresolved differences between the two parties, in addition to the intersections with other parties that have observations in the context of amending the election law and the commission," noting that "the most contentious point between the Democratic Party and the Union on the one hand and the parties on the other hand is Ingredients quota and how to vote.
He added, "Strong international pressure still exists to hold elections this year. There is international and popular pressure, as well as pressure from political parties on the two main parties," noting that "no elections may be held in the region at the specified time."
For his part, Diyar Aqrawi, a member of the Kurdistan Union, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah" that "there are several demands by political parties in the region calling for amending the election law because it dates back to 1992, in addition to activating the commission and the quota issue, revising the voter register and multiplying constituencies." Considering that the reason for the delay is "the failure to meet these demands and the lack of agreement between the political parties to make these changes and amendments."
Aqrawi added, "The talks between the Democratic Party and the Union did not produce consensus, except for what is rumored in the media that a group of points has been reached and that it is possible that they will form a joint committee to go to other parties and present to them what they agreed upon in terms of changing and amending the election law and the commission."
Regarding the union's position on the date of the elections, he said: "We were not informed of this decision, and as long as this law is old and the claims are not met, the elections will be difficult and will not be held except by satisfying all political parties in the region."
