The electricity sector is facing a new crisis with the interruption of Iranian gas supplies, supplied to the southern region, which caused limitation of the loads of the southern and middle Euphrates stations, and a shortage of 1,000 megawatts of electricity.
And the Ministry of Electricity announced, on Sunday, that the supply of gas supplied to the southern region has decreased, which caused a decrease in energy production by about 1,000 megawatts from the system’s production, according to a ministry statement.
The ministry said in a statement, "While it is trying to increase electricity production in Iraq, and announcing the readiness of generation units in its stations to keep pace with the stability of electricity supply hours for citizens with the peak of summer loads, Iranian gas supplies have stopped."
Technical reasons
The Ministry of Electricity attributed the new crisis to technical reasons, according to what was reported from the Iranian side, explaining that the outage caused a decrease in the loads of the Shatt al-Basra gas stations, the Rumaila gas and investment stations, and the Najaf gas stations in the Middle Euphrates regions.
The interruption of Iranian gas from the southern region also led to the system losing about 1,000 megawatts of electricity production, which affects the hours of electricity supply.
At the same time, the Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, directed the necessity of conducting intensive and high coordination with the Ministry of Oil, in order to compensate for the lost power plants of the gas needed for their operation, according to what was stated in the ministry's statement.
The Ministry of Electricity also recommended that citizens prioritize the public interest in rationalizing energy consumption, by turning off unnecessary appliances and lighting, so that the Ministry's workers can control loads and reduce operational costs in exchange for gas purchases.
High Bill The
Iranian gas import bill costs Iraq's budget large numbers, as Baghdad - despite being the second largest oil producer in OPEC - has not yet succeeded in achieving self-sufficiency in gas.
During the past 3 years, Baghdad faced many challenges in importing Iranian gas, which witnessed several interruptions, some of which were for technical reasons, while others were due to financial reasons, due to non-payment of Tehran's dues to Iraq.
And the Ministry of Electricity had announced, last April 2023, that the volume of annual spending to import Iranian gas, or gas from the Kurdistan region, amounts to about 8 trillion dinars (6 billion US dollars).
Ahmed Musa, a spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity at the time, pointed out that the ministry needs an operational budget to pay dues for the supplied gas, in addition to dues for buying energy from investors according to government contracts, and to conduct periodic maintenance of generation units, power networks, lines, transmission and distribution.
