Fuel crises reveal the lack of refinery production

The Parliamentary Oil, Gas and Natural Resources Committee attributed the reasons for the recurrence of fuel crises in Baghdad and the provinces to the lack of production of some refineries, at a time when experts confirm that Iraq imports 16 million liters per day out of 32 million liters of total national consumption per day.
Committee member Sabah Sobhi said: “The reason for the repeated crisis is due to the lack of production of the current refineries and problems in some of them, such as the Karbala refinery, which suffered from technical problems,” noting that “if the Karbala refinery can reach its maximum capacity, we will witness a new phase of partial self-sufficiency.” .
Sobhi added, to "Al-Sabah", that "there is a second reason for the crisis, which is the spread of rumors that lead to a sudden influx of cars to the stations."
Regarding the number of oil fields, he explained that “the total number of Iraq’s fields is 72 fields in all governorates, including the Kurdistan region, while the investor is estimated at 35 of them, according to internal control in the Ministry of Oil,” noting that “the fifth licensing round for gas has ended and has been referred to companies and the government in Develop the sixth round, which in turn needs time.
In the context, committee member Zainab Juma al-Moussawi called for “increasing production and refining operations in Iraq to meet the local need for oil derivatives, with a vision for those in charge of the ministry and its companies to develop the work of the current refineries.”
Al-Moussawi expected, in an interview with Al-Sabah, “The crisis will finally end after the entry of the Al-Faw and Anbar refineries into actual service, in addition to the entry of the Karbala refinery, which feeds the local demand for oil derivatives by more than 60 percent.”
While a member of the committee, Bassem Naghimish Al-Gharibawi, gave, in an interview with Al-Sabah, the reasons for “the recurrence of the gasoline crisis every six months on the Ministry of Oil, which did not address the crisis radically, which leads to the accumulation of vehicle queues at gas stations,” pointing out that “the justifications It is represented in the late arrival of fuel tankers, power outages, or refinery shutdowns.”
In addition, energy expert Dr. Furat Al-Moussawi said, in an interview with Al-Sabah: “The local demand for gasoline reaches 32 million liters per day during the summer, of which 540 thousand liters of gasoline are sent to the Kurdistan region,” noting that “ Iraq imports about 16 million liters per day, and the rest is produced locally.”
Al-Moussawi pointed out that “the reasons for crowding at fuel filling stations are due to the delay in loading oil products in refineries and warehouses and sending them to the stations due to high temperatures and the importance of adhering to safety conditions,” adding that “this is added to the delay in the arrival of some fuel ships loaded with gasoline to Iraq due to organizational matters.” navigational.”
Al-Moussawi added, “The fuel stations have their own quota or order, which is supplied according to prepared schedules and according to the needs of the geographical region.
