Iraq will participate in a symposium on “Iraqi Visual Memory” during the activities of the 23rd session of the Rotterdam Arab Film Festival, which will be held from September 5 to 10 in Egypt, in addition to the films “Baghdad Messi” and “The Fifth Story”.
And quoting Egyptian media outlets, Rosh Abdel-Fattah, director of the festival, said: “In this year’s festival, we are interested in visual memory, as a symposium will be held on the experience of saving the memory of Iraq, which the Iraqi filmmaker and writer Qassem Hawal, who resides in the Netherlands, took the initiative to present to save the history of his country and succeeded in establishing an Iraqi museum.” To preserve the archive with the support of the Prime Minister of Iraq, the Iraqi army and UNESCO.
He added: “The festival is also honored to invite Dr. Diaa Al-Saray from UNESCO, who has accompanied the initiative since its inception, to tell the festival audience about the Iraqi experience in caring for visual memory in a cinematic symposium in which director Qassem participates. With all the information related to the memory of peoples and the Iraqi memory, as the political conditions of Iraq, the written, audio and visual documents were subjected to theft and damage due to irregular preservation conditions, although the developed countries of the world pay great attention to their written and illustrated memory, especially those cinematographic documents in the beginnings of moving the still image.
Abdel Fattah also confirmed that “this year, we brought unique Arab films from the sixties and seventies from Japan, thanks to a Japanese participant with the Palestinian resistance, who brought more than 20 rare films and fortunately they escaped destruction due to wars and violence, and from this group we selected 3 Films that have a special relationship with Iraq, in the presence of director Muhannad Yaqoubi, who discovered these films, rescued them and brought them from Japan,” pointing out that “one of the films that will be shown on a special day for Iraq (Baghdad Messi) is directed by Suhem Omar Khalifa, and it is a joint production between Belgium and Iraq, (The Fifth Story Directed by Ahmed Abdo, an Iraqi-Qatari production.
