Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: On International Literacy Eradication Day, the seriousness of its widespread spread in Iraq is highlighted, as confirmed by the head of the National Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, calling for the launch of a national campaign to reduce the rate of its spread.
There are many reasons for the increase in the illiteracy rate in Iraq, the most prominent of which is the unstable political and security conditions, as the wars and armed conflicts that Iraq has witnessed since 2003 led to the destruction of the educational infrastructure, the displacement of the population, and the death of many teachers, which led to a decrease in the rate of children’s enrollment in schools and a high rate of School dropout.
Unemployment and poverty deprive many children of their right to education, as they are forced to work at an early age to help support their families.
Some social and cultural factors contribute to the spread of illiteracy in Iraq, such as customs and traditions that prefer male education over female education, and a lack of awareness of the importance of education in society.

According to official statements, the illiteracy rate in Iraq rose to 13% in 2022, after it was 12% in 2021. The number of illiterates in Iraq is estimated at about 11 million people, including 7.3 million women.
Educational expert Ahmed Farhan Al-Shammari told Al-Masala that confronting the phenomenon requires a number of measures, including improving the education system in Iraq by providing the necessary infrastructure, training teachers, developing educational curricula, providing support to poor and displaced students, and educating society about the importance of education, noting that these measures It needs support from the international community and humanitarian organizations, to ensure success in eliminating illiteracy in Iraq.
