Baghdad/Al-Masala Event: Preparations for the Third Baghdad Conference began with the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Baghdad.
The French President's first concern is to increase investment in Iraq and the Gulf states, with the rise in oil prices and the increase in inflation in France.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Sahhaf announced earlier that French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna will visit Baghdad at the end of this month.
The “Baghdad 2” conference was held on December 20, 2022, in the Jordanian capital, Amman, after a first session held in Baghdad in August 2021 on an Iraqi-French initiative, with the participation of Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, and Iran.
Macron is expected to discuss with Iraqi officials ways to cooperate in the field of combating terrorism, including the exchange of intelligence information and cooperation in the field of military training to operate French companies suffering from the recession.
Macron had visited Iraq following the withdrawal of French forces in 2019, as France was among the countries that participated in the international coalition that fought ISIS.
After the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, France participated in the international coalition that fought ISIS. Since then, France has strengthened its relations with Iraq, signing several bilateral agreements between the two countries.
France has strong political and economic relations with many Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. France is one of the largest investors in the Gulf countries, as it has large investments in the oil, gas and infrastructure sectors, and that is why it seeks to be a mediator in resolving the disputes between Iraq and Kuwait.
France competes with the United States, Iraq's main security partner, and its largest trading partner.
China seeks to strengthen its influence in Iraq and the Gulf states, as China invests heavily in the energy and infrastructure sectors in the region, which worries France.
Iran is also a strong competitor to France in Iraq and the Gulf states.
