On Tuesday, the Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, presented a comprehensive briefing to the Security Council regarding the Sudanese government, which is approaching the completion of its first year (formed on 10/24/2022).
Plasschaert said in her briefing, “The government of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani presented important steps and promising initiatives within a year of its formation,” noting that “the Iraqi government has taken important steps in reforming the financial and banking sector.”
She added, "Iraq has become in a position to seize opportunities," noting that "the Iraqi government has taken steps in the budget that allow for an increase in private sector investments."
She continued, "Iraq has made clear efforts to secure the situation on the borders with Iran and Turkey, and its agreement with Iran falls within the dialogue in accordance with international standards," welcoming "the activation of bilateral committees between Iraq and Turkey to address the situation on the borders."
Regarding the Khor Abdullah crisis, Plasschaert indicated that “the Iraqi government has made clear beyond doubt its commitment to the principles of international law and United Nations resolutions,” noting that “Iraq is committed to its positive relations with its neighbors.”
She noted that “the Iraqi government has placed achieving water security as its top priority, and has developed a national strategy to combat drugs and psychotropic substances.”
She announced that “the tripartite budget included paragraphs to meet urgent needs such as infrastructure development projects, and also included the highest financial allocations to provide social services such as health care and education.”
She concluded by saying, “Provincial council elections represent a crucial necessity for all Iraqis. All actors - at the national or regional level - are called upon to play their role in maintaining stability in the period leading up to the elections. “Including efforts to combat fake and misleading information.”
