The position of Speaker of Parliament depends on the political agreement

The “Al-Amal” parliamentary bloc saw that choosing a person for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives has become subject to political dialogues between the parties of the Sunni component, stressing that the acting Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, is not clinging to the position, but rather is waiting for a president to be named for the position based on the merits of the component, Yesterday, Tuesday, the Federal Supreme Court issued a decision regarding postponing the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The court said in a statement: It “issued its decision No. (86/Federal/2024) containing the ruling on the invalidity of paragraph (2) of the House of Representatives’ decision taken in the second session on 1/27/2024, which includes postponing the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives until the lawsuits are decided.” considered by the judiciary.
Meanwhile, the representative of the “Al-Amal” parliamentary bloc, Yasser Al-Husseini, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The members of the House of Representatives - especially the acting Speaker of the House of Representatives - are not clinging to the position. On the contrary, as soon as there is a (Sunni) agreement... Sunni) to go towards a specific person as President of the Council, the election session will be held immediately.” He added, "So far, the dialogues between the Sunni component have not led to clear results regarding the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives from the component," explaining that "the paragraph on electing the Speaker of the Council is on the agenda, but the question is: Is there agreement on a specific personality!?", indicating “There are Sunni forces that object to this election, and other Shiite and Sunni forces that want to go ahead with the elections, and the acting Speaker of the House of Representatives is not committed to the position, so the politicians in the Sunni component must unify their word, and all we have to do is go ahead with the elections.”
For his part, a member of the Al-Fatah Alliance, Ali Al-Zubaidi, said: “The coordination framework’s move towards holding a session to select the Speaker of Parliament will not complicate the political scene and will not lead to creating a new political crisis.”
He added, "The Sunni parties were very late in deciding the issue of the presidency of Parliament, and it has become necessary to go towards setting the dots on the letters with the aim of stabilizing the legislative authority and ensuring the presence of a new speaker of the House of Representatives."
Al-Zubaidi stressed that “the coordinating framework is determined to resolve matters regarding the presidency of Parliament, so that the Council can exercise its authority and oversight over the state and its institutions,” and pointed out that “any delay in the continuation of the status quo will cause harm to the exercise of oversight work and thus negatively affect state institutions.”
