2023-11-01 Turkey and Iran called, on Wednesday, to hold a regional conference with the aim of avoiding the expansion of the war that broke out between Israel and Hamas.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, on Wednesday in Ankara, a day after Abdollahian’s meeting with Hamas leaders in Doha.
Iran has warned that the armed groups it supports in the region may attack Israel if it continues its war on Hamas, according to Sky News.
Fidan said Turkey is pressing for an immediate ceasefire because “it is not difficult to predict that this spiral of violence will grow” without a permanent solution to the war.
Agence France-Presse quoted Vidal as saying, “We do not want the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza to turn into a war that affects the countries of the region,” expressing his “concern” about that.
The Turkish official added, “We are concerned about the geographical expansion of the conflict. We also discussed this with our Iranian brother, who stated that there are strong indications that other armed elements in the region may intervene in the conflict if circumstances do not change.”
He stressed that “ceasefire and peace have become more urgent than ever.”
Abdullahian said that holding a peace conference that includes “Islamic and Arab” countries must take place “as soon as possible.” He also called on the Islamic world to boycott Israeli products because of the war.
Later, the Iranian minister met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
He said in statements reported by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, “If the war against the defenseless people in Gaza does not stop immediately, there is a risk that the scope of war and conflict in the region will expand at any moment.”
He added: “It is necessary for Islamic countries to take immediate and effective measures to end the war crimes committed by the Zionist regime, lift the siege on Gaza, and send humanitarian aid.”
On October 7, the Hamas movement launched an unprecedented attack in the history of the Hebrew state, during which it infiltrated Israeli areas through the separation fence and attacked border towns and residential communities, causing the death of more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, and 240 hostages were also taken, according to the Israeli authorities.
The Hebrew state has responded with intense bombing of the Gaza Strip since then, killing 8,796 people so far, according to what the Hamas Ministry of Health announced.
