The Holy Karbala Sewerage Directorate announced the provision of pumps and electric generators and increasing the capacity of operating stations, as part of its ongoing campaigns since the month of Muharram Al-Haram to maintain (50) stations and heavy water and rainwater drainage networks in preparation for the winter rainy season.
Assistant Director, Engineer Jalil Ibrahim Al-Sabbagh, said in an interview with Noon News Agency, “The Holy Governorate of Karbala is one of the best governorates in sanitation and rainwater projects, after overcoming many of the problems of street flooding that occurred several years ago with solutions by the Directorate,” adding, “But With the great, progressive and rapid development taking place in the governorate, the directorate tried to keep up with it by providing appropriate infrastructure, since the infrastructure projects for heavy water and rain drainage projects are considered the most expensive among the rest of the projects, and their implementation is equivalent to many times the amount spent on paving streets or construction, and the directorate has prepared for a long time and has increased. The capacities of our operating stations and networks in areas that have witnessed urban expansion, including raising the capacity of the Abbas neighborhood station from one thousand cubic meters per hour to two thousand cubic meters per hour for the rainwater and heavy water networks, which, in addition to their work, bear the drainage of rainwater from the roofs of houses and buildings, since most citizens connect The water from those surfaces is drained onto heavy water drainage networks, and the capacity of the important Bab Baghdad station, which serves visitors and residents, has increased from (900) cubic meters per hour to (2500) cubic meters, and it can also reach (3000) cubic meters per hour.”
Al-Sabbagh added, “The wastewater system consists of three parts, which are the sewage and rainwater collection networks, the reception and collection station for that water, and the pumping pipes to the sewer or wastewater treatment units. The expansion must include all parts of the system to increase its capacity, because sewage projects have a large dimension.” It is strategic and its capacity extends for decades, as it is underground in residential or industrial areas, and it is difficult to re-excavate and expand. Maintenance campaigns are continuing in (50) stations to prepare for the winter and rainy season. New pumps and generators have been prepared due to the electrical current being cut off with the rains. In fact, some stations, such as The main Abbas (peace be upon him) tunnel station was provided with two generators instead of one, because it cannot stop working for a single minute due to its importance. What makes our work most difficult is the misuse by citizens of the sewage network, which harms them. It is not reasonable to find stations whose work is weakened by throwing water. He explained that “network cleaning campaigns are continuing, as operations to clean rainwater networks began a month ago from now, while heavy water networks have been continuing since the first of the holy month of Muharram in preparation for the visit to the tenth of Muharram, and then another campaign in preparation for the fortieth visit, and work is continuing now,” stressing that “Cleaning costs are expensive, but they are insignificant in light of the dangers caused by clogged networks and the toxic gases emanating from them, which cost the lives of citizens, because we need a culture of preserving sewage and infrastructure because they are linked to human life.”
