Representative Omid Muhammad expected today, Wednesday (December 13, 2023), that the participation rate in the December 18 elections in Kirkuk Governorate will be high for three reasons.
Muhammad said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the Federal Court’s decision to proceed with holding the Kirkuk elections on December 18 rejoiced the citizens of the province, especially since there was concern about its postponement due to the claims of some political forces,” pointing out that “the participation rate will be higher.” From the 2021 elections for three reasons, most notably the desire for change and support for the arrival of a government capable of providing services to all regions, in addition to the presence of means to reassure votes, especially the biometric system, cameras, and the Commission’s procedures that will enhance the scope of participation.
He added, "There are political forces that fear proceeding with the elections in Kirkuk, and this is what prompted them to try to postpone them under the pretext that there are doubts about the voter registry, but the decision of the Federal Court ended all doubts, and holding the elections became binding on all political parties, and the pretext of the voter registry no longer hinders their holding in order to give an opportunity." For the people to choose their representatives.”
The participation rate in the 2021 parliamentary elections was 43%. In contrast, Nineveh Governorate came in first place as the governorate that updated the most biometric cards for the upcoming elections, while Kirkuk came in second place in terms of updating, according to the Commission.
Yesterday, Tuesday, the Federal Supreme Court decided to hold the Kirkuk elections on time with the other governorates on December 18, after it rejected a lawsuit demanding the postponement of the Kirkuk elections due to fears of manipulation of the demographic distribution ratios of the governorate’s population.
