    Economy News - Baghdad
The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab, announced on Sunday that the cost of constructing the Makhul Dam amounts to $3 billion, indicating that it will not serve Iraq’s water storage, while warning of “changing the features” of the Tigris River as a result of violations.
Dhiyab said during a press conference held in the ministry building, “The purpose of the Prime Minister’s directive to review some strategic projects and stop them is to correct the direction of implementing the projects, including the Al-Bid’a project to transport water to Basra at a cost of 3 billion dollars, and the works were completely stopped, as well as the Makhul Dam project as well.” It cost 3 billion dollars and was stopped,” explaining that “constructing the dam will not serve the water storage in Iraq, but will cause a loss estimated at one billion cubic meters as a result of evaporation.”
He pointed out, "The government intends to limit the waste of public money and provide services, and from this principle we set out to provide services and reduce the phenomena of encroachment on Iraqi waters."
The Iraqi minister pointed out that "there are violations on the water and positions have been taken, especially in removing unauthorized fish lakes and unauthorized pumps, which are very large cards, in addition to encroachment on the banks of the rivers," warning that "the violations of some violators will change the features of the Tigris River."
He pointed out that "the King Ghazi area in Al-Daghara will witness development during the coming period." Diab noted that a new technology was used to regulate the use of water, and the Arab ministers praised it and that it prevents the growth of reeds and papyrus in addition to preventing abuses on both sides of the rivers.
He continued, "We took over the ministry at the lowest level of water storage, and we had a challenge that we faced, represented by the annual evaporation of water in Iraq, which is estimated at about 8 billion cubic meters, and the threat was to the Euphrates River."
The minister continued by saying, "90% of water revenues come from Turkey, and it was released in limited quantities at a rate, and the release did not exceed 300 cubic meters per second. Therefore, the ministry headed to Lake Tharthar, and a large pump was installed to boost the Euphrates River last summer season."
