    Hussein Falih:
The government spokesman, Bassem Al-Awadi, confirmed that the government is considering ending the mission of the international coalition to fight ISIS in Iraq, more than 6 years after the victory over the terrorist ISIS organization, while he announced the formation of joint higher committees between Baghdad and Washington to end The coalition mission in Iraq.
Al-Awadi said in an interview: The issue of ending the international coalition to fight ISIS in Iraq is linked to the mission being carried out, that is, the mission of the international coalition to fight ISIS. Stating: Iraq declared victory over ISIS in 2017, and from 2017 until 2023, successive governments before the current ninth government committed to providing legal cover for the presence of coalition forces to perform this mission, and now is the time to move towards studying where we have reached with the coalition.
He added: This issue is one of the governmental programs adopted by the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, as evidenced by the fact that the Iraqi delegation that visited Washington on August 7, 2023 was headed by the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Head of the Counter-Terrorism Service, the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, and a large group of security and intelligence officers, as It was a very large delegation, and it attracted attention.
He explained: One of the points discussed by the delegation in Washington, by order of the Prime Minister, was the issue of ending the international coalition’s mission in Iraq. Pointing out: The Prime Minister asked the Minister of Defense and a group of members of the delegation to visit all political leaders in Iraq before going to Washington, to inform them of this mission, and to listen to their opinions.
He continued: Before traveling, the Minister of Defense visited the major political and party leaders in Iraq, presented the issue to them, listened to their views, and submitted a report to the Prime Minister. They collected ideas and came up with a national formula representing the Prime Minister and the major Iraqi parties, and they raised the issue in Washington. Confirming: There were preparations and a higher committee was formed between Iraq and the international coalition in order to begin discussing ending the mission of the international coalition’s presence in Iraq.
Earlier, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani said, during the joint press conference with his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sanchez, in the government palace in the center of the capital, Baghdad: “The meeting with the Spanish Prime Minister included a more detailed conversation related to the status of the international coalition, especially since Spain is part of this.” The coalition,” pointing to “the role of the coalition and Spain in supporting Iraq’s efforts to confront the terrorist ISIS, in which Iraq was victorious.”
He pointed out that “the Iraqi government is in the process of rearranging the relationship in light of capable Iraqi forces,” stressing that “the Iraqi government is moving toward ending the presence of the international coalition forces, which includes security advisors who support the security forces in the areas of training, advice, and intelligence cooperation.”
He concluded by saying: “There have recently been attacks on Iraqi military bases and diplomatic missions, and we affirmed the government’s official and clear position rejecting these attacks, which we believe are hostile acts that harm the national interest of Iraq and affect the security and stability of the country. We emphasized the importance of adhering to the legal mandate granted by governments.” The previous Iraqi presence, which must be within the framework of support for the security forces in the areas of training, and must not exceed the limit of carrying out military actions as they represent an infringement on Iraqi sovereignty, which is unacceptable.”
He pointed out that “the Iraqi government is aware, committed, and capable of carrying out its duties to preserve the security of diplomatic missions and the locations of security advisors.”[/size]
