The Ministry of Agriculture intends to establish a marine fishing fleet, while it will soon build a hatchery in Basra Governorate to produce fingerling fish that tolerate salt water. Assistant Director General of the Department of Livestock for Fish Affairs at the Ministry, Dr. Hatem Al-Jubouri, told Al-Sabah: The Ministry has prepared future plans for the growth and development of fish wealth, the first of which is to support licensed ponds and lakes and provide all their needs of fingerlings provided by the best hatcheries affiliated with the Ministry, which are Essaouira, Al-Maymouna, and Al-Mushrah. And whey, whose annual production of carp fingerlings of its three types: common, herbal and silver, reaches 40 million. He added that fingerlings are sold to fish breeders who own licensed lakes at subsidized prices not exceeding 21 dinars per fingerling, and they are supported with fodder, compared to the selling price in local markets of 120 dinars per fingerling, revealing that the total production of fish during the past year reached 56 thousand tons, with Babylon leading the way. The governorates in terms of production quantity are followed by the Tarmiyah region in Baghdad. He stated that the Ministry, through its development programs, focused on water bodies and artificial lakes for raising fish after the decisions taken by the Ministry of Water Resources to fill in the encroaching lakes, which amount to 40 percent of their total number, which resulted in a decrease in fish production and a recent increase in their prices. He revealed his ministry's intention to revitalize marine fishing and rehabilitate the fish port, through establishing an integrated marine fleet for fishing, in addition to supporting local fishermen within the marine waters by providing spare parts for their boats, and using modern technologies in the fishing process.
The Assistant Director General of the Department of Livestock for Fish Affairs continued that his department prepared a study and it was approved, which includes starting soon to establish a hatchery for the production of saltwater fish fingerlings, which will be built in the Siba area in Basra Governorate to supply the southern governorates with salt-tolerant fish fingerlings to supply the local markets with their production, attributing the trend to producing this. This type of fingerling is due to the continued high salt tide in Basra, compared to the lack of fresh water in the southern governorates, especially within Basra, Maysan,
and Dhi Qar.
