Interior Ministry: We will buy all citizens’ weapons, even if they are missiles and drones

Yesterday, Sunday, the Ministry of Interior confirmed that the State Weapons Control Committee will purchase all citizens’ weapons, even if they are “heavy” such as missiles, drones, and projectiles.
The spokesman for the Ministry and the Security Media Cell, Brigadier General Miqdad Al-Moussawi, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), “The arms control committee in the hands of the state will determine the prices of weapons that it will purchase from citizens according to controls that will be announced in the coming days,” indicating that his ministry “will purchase All light, medium and even heavy weapons of citizens, including missiles, drones and projectiles.”
He added, “The mechanism for withdrawing weapons takes place through (the registration and purchase stage), where the citizen registers his weapon through an electronic window,” pointing out that “the citizen has the right to possess one light weapon, such as a rifle or pistol, and he sells his other weapons to the Ministry of Interior.”
He continued, “The period set by the committee to purchase citizens’ weapons ends 12/31/2024, and it will purchase all weapons, including missiles and drones.”
Earlier, the Ministry of Interior allocated an amount of one billion dinars to each governorate, in order to purchase medium-sized weapons from citizens, as part of the second phase of the project to confine weapons to the state.
The Undersecretary for Police Affairs, Adel Abbas Al-Khalidi, said in a statement to the official media, followed by (Al-Mada), that “this project is one of the most important government projects, because it has many repercussions, the most important of which is reducing uncontrolled weapons in society, and thus eliminating all forms of civil armament.”
It is noteworthy that last week witnessed the launch of the form for registering citizens’ weapons, as part of the first phase.
Al-Khalidi added, “The second phase of the project includes purchasing medium weapons from citizens after forming a committee to determine the most important instructions and required amounts, as one billion dinars have been allocated to each governorate in order to implement this phase.”
There are no official statistics on the phenomenon of the spread of weapons in Iraq, between individual, medium and heavy weapons, but unofficial estimates speak of about 30 weapons for every 100 citizens. For example, government estimates say that Iraqi tribes alone possess about seven million weapons.
