The Ministry of Interior is moving to code seized government weapons in order to limit their sale and circulation, while it has joined the Shaylik portal to track missing weapons.
The secretary and rapporteur of the National Committee for Arms Regulation and its confinement to the state, Brigadier General Mansour Ali Sultan, told “Al-Sabah”: Among the goals of the committee, which is headed by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Police Affairs and membership of a number of ministries, including Defense, Foreign Affairs, Justice, Labor, Social Affairs, the Counter-Terrorism Service, the National Security Service, and the Mobilization Forces. The People's Liberation Army, as well as others, limit the sale, circulation and transfer of weapons in accordance with the National Security Council decision. He added that the Ministry is preparing to carry out the coding of weapons, that is, there will be a special tattoo for all government institutions, which determines the ownership of a piece of weapon to any party if it is sold or traded in the markets, indicating that the first stage of this process will be exclusively for the weapons of government institutions and the seized ones.
Sultan stated that the Ministry was able to obtain Resolution No. 16 of 2023 to follow up on missing weapons, especially since the terrorist attacks that the country was subjected to after the year 2014 led to the loss of many weapons after they were stolen and transferred between countries, as Iraq became, according to the aforementioned resolution, a member of the To the (Shaylak) portal to track lost weapons globally, noting that work is underway to track more than 47 thousand weapons to return them to the country. He explained that the committee has prepared a unified database for the weapons of government security and non-security institutions, which includes weapons in the possession of the government, which it purchased, and those seized from citizens, criminals, and terrorist groups, as they will be coded after being entered into the database.
