    Hussein Falih:
Citizens and specialists warned of the significant increase in the prices of table eggs after the Council of Ministers’ decision to impose customs duties of 50% on the importer, in addition to the previous duties of 20%, stressing that this will affect the livelihood of the poor who consider eggs an essential item in his table. While the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that the table egg sector will recover locally after the Council of Ministers’ decision, it ruled out the price of one “layer” rising to significant levels in local markets.
A number of citizens and specialists in economic affairs told Al-Zawraa: The decision to raise the rate of customs duties on imported eggs will cast a shadow on the price of layer eggs in local markets in light of the scarcity of the local product and its poor quality. Pointing out that eggs are considered a basic item in the Iraqi table, which means that the poor citizen will not be able to buy eggs when their price increases.
Citizens appealed to the government to wait with the decision until a fixed price policy is found that binds producers and importers to it to prevent price manipulation.
For his part, Dr. Mahdi Damad Al-Qaisi, advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture, said in an interview with Al-Zawraa: The Council of Ministers’ decision to impose 50 percent, in addition to the previous 20 percent, on imported table eggs is correct, and comes for the purpose of protecting the local product. Pointing out that the decision will revive the egg sector in Iraq because it will push local producers to pay attention and increase production.
He added: The Council of Ministers’ decision obligated producers to number the locally produced egg to identify it and distinguish it from imported eggs or those imported outside import controls. Stressing that after defining the local product, the imported product that enters illegally will be identified.
He pointed out: This is considered a conditional protection for the local product in accordance with the Iraqi Products Protection Law No. (11) of 2010, ruling out the rise in the price of egg layers to significant levels in local markets after this decision. On the contrary, it will encourage producers to improve the quality of eggs and pay attention to this sector.
He continued: The problem in our country is that food manufacturing is still ineffective and we need to apply the Iraqi Products Protection Law mentioned above on locally manufactured paste and other locally produced food items, as well as activate Consumer Protection Law No. (1) of 2010.
It is noteworthy that the Council of Ministers decided Earlier, an additional customs duty of 20% was imposed on imported table eggs,
and the Prime Minister’s Media Office stated in a statement: It is part of the government’s measures to protect the local product, support the national industry, and ensure the provision of job opportunities in important economic projects. The Council of Ministers approved To approve the recommendations of the meeting held on April 24, 2024, according to the following:
    1. Imposing an additional customs duty of (50%) on imported table eggs, in addition to the original customs duty of (20%), approved by Cabinet Resolution (23672 for the year 2023).
    2. Obligating producers to affix standard labels for their product (product name, production date, and expiration date on the outer packaging).
    3. Obligating producers to place the production date and product label on each egg, within a maximum period of (3 months) from the date of issuance of this decision.
    4. Preventing the transfer of table eggs that do not carry the visas mentioned in Paragraph (2) above between governorates.
    5. Assigning the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture, the Competition and Antitrust Council, and the Iraqi Association for Poultry Producers to monitor the implementation of the decision on an ongoing basis, and to submit monthly reports to the Ministerial Council for the Economy.
6 This decision will be implemented as of May 2, 2024.[/size]
