Many of the government’s procedures in the field of customs work are considered major components for the advancement of the development process in Iraq and an interest of an economic and security nature at the same time. They work to collect taxes and provide important imports on the one hand and monitor commercial exchanges on the borders on the other hand. They also play important roles in Supporting the local economy because it attracts investors and protects the local product in several aspects, including ridding the Iraqi market of imported goods and merchandise of poor quality, whose prices are often cheap to the extent of competing with what is available in the local markets of good quality national products, as well as preventing smuggling at land ports. And this would, of course, protect the country from the entry of prohibited and harmful materials and monitor the transit of goods and individuals, especially since customs activities are subject to the authority of local provisions and international laws through external agreements such as the World Trade Organization and free trade agreements.
The external openness of the Iraqi Customs Authority is a necessary era to facilitate trade and technical support from international organizations such as the international system on trade, investment and development issues to achieve the goals of increasing trade and investment opportunities in developing countries to the maximum extent and to assist them in their efforts to integrate into the global economy on a fair basis. It must be said that the past few months have witnessed many encouraging measures for the General Customs Authority as it seeks to focus efforts to spread the system in all its offices in all regions of the country, relying on the latest technologies to improve customs control and facilitate trade, the latest of which is the efforts of the investigation and anti-smuggling departments in the customs areas and the anti-smuggling departments in the Directorate. Northern Region Customs seized dozens of trucks loaded with various materials, including iron of various uses, electrical appliances, plastic pipes, silo cement, human medicines, and household utensils, as well as various other materials in different regions of the country, all of which were in violation of import terms and controls.
