    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]The Ministry of Health confirmed on Friday that 20 percent of Iraqi adults smoke.[/rtl]
[rtl]Assistant Director of the Tobacco Control Program at the Ministry, Waseem Kilan, said, “20 percent of Iraqis who are 18 or older smoke tobacco of all kinds, while 40-50 percent of Iraqis suffer from passive smoking due to their indirect exposure to tobacco smoke,” noting that “The vast majority of smokers are men.”[/rtl]
[rtl]He added, "Spending on smoking amounts to 6 billion dinars per day, while we have diagnosed the presence of toxic and other narcotic substances in regular cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and honey," noting that "electronic cigarettes contain 127 toxic substances, including lead."[/rtl]
[rtl]He continued: "We expect a death to be recorded every 10 minutes due to smoking in Iraq, and smoking early affects brain development, as there are electronic cigarettes in the form of (swabs) today in schools."[/rtl]
[rtl]He pointed out that "there are difficulties in implementing the tobacco control law, but there is a new draft law in Parliament to protect against the harms of tobacco, which has clear mechanisms for implementation."[/rtl]
