    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Agriculture indicated, on Thursday, the reasons for the rise in fish prices, and while explaining its procedures to address it, it confirmed that it had contacted the Central Bank and the Agricultural Bank to grant soft loans for fish farming.
The administrative representative of the ministry, Mahdi Sahar, said, "The lack of water revenues from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, especially from the Turkish side, has greatly affected the water reserves in Iraq, which prompted the ministry to take measures, including filling in the encroached lakes that were supplying local markets with fish, which was reflected in the rise in fish prices in local markets."
He added that "the ministry has organized the mud lakes, granted new licenses for floating cages, and set environmental standards in cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources," explaining that "these measures will create a suitable environment for fish farming in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers."
He pointed out that "the closed fish system is a successful alternative to floating ponds, in which the number of ponds decreases during the decline in the water level in the Tigris and Euphrates," indicating that "the closed system requires a continuous electric current to raise fish."
He pointed out that "the ministry has approached the Central Bank of Iraq and the Agricultural Cooperative Bank to grant soft loans for fish farming."
