Report..
For more than two decades, Iraq has lacked a modern air defense system to confront violations and air attacks carried out by drones, most of which are American. Iraq has not been able to obtain long-range air defense systems as a result of the United States’ dominance over this file, as Washington uses its veto power to restrict the diversification of Iraqi armament sources. It has thwarted Iraq’s purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system, which was completed during the era of previous prime ministers.
Iraqi military sources revealed that Al-Sudani's government, with the support of the Coordination Framework, is moving towards several countries to purchase air defense systems after Washington reneged on its promises to help Iraq rehabilitate its air defense sector several years ago.
The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee confirmed that there is an Iraqi move to implement the strategy of fortified airspace, by obtaining air defense systems that secure its airspace from violations, especially after the recent air attacks that targeted the headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces.
Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Yasser Watout, said: “An important part of the priorities of Iraqi national security is securing the atmosphere in light of the unstable regional and international situation that could explode at any moment.”
He added: “There are many reasons behind the weakness of air defense capabilities in Iraq, but the situation cannot be accepted in light of the serious challenges that affect the country’s security and the recurrence of violations against official Iraqi forces from time to time.” He revealed that Iraq is moving to acquire some advanced systems to protect the airspace and important areas and create an umbrella that helps reduce violations according to the available capabilities.
However, Wattot doubted the seriousness of the United States in providing Iraq with air defense systems, noting that Washington is blackmailing Iraq in this file, especially since Iraq is demanding an end to the military presence of American forces on its territory.

In addition, Salam Hussein, a member of the Fatah Alliance, confirmed that Washington is obstructing the provision of Iraqi forces with advanced air defense systems.
Hussein said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The government has failed throughout the previous years to build an air defense system because of its reliance on the American side in the field of armament and building military capabilities,” noting that “Washington has obstructed the Iraqi army’s efforts to diversify its sources of weapons and its main arsenal and has been intervening to prevent the completion of deals with non-countries.”
He added, "The government wants to develop this system during the coming period to fully protect Iraqi airspace in light of the recent developments in the region," noting that "Iraq's possession of these systems is an important matter and must be resolved quickly."
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, confirmed in a statement to the official agency that the Iraqi airspace is not completely secure, but we are able to monitor the aircraft entering and exiting, while indicating that the system purchased from South Korea requires time to complete its construction.
