    [ltr]US, South Korean and Japanese troops on Monday launched joint exercises aimed at monitoring North Korean missiles, days after Pyongyang launched an unprecedented intercontinental ballistic missile, the South Korean military said.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The six exercises of its kind since June 2016, which are supposed to last two days, are taking place in the sea off the Korean peninsula and Japan," the South Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"During the exercise, Aegis warships from each country will carry out mock experiments on monitoring and tracking North Korean ballistic missiles and then share information," it said in a statement.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Two US and two South Korean ships and a Japanese ship are participating in the exercise, which comes less than two weeks after Pyongyang launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile that fell into the sea off the coast of Japan.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Japan and South Korea, which have historical differences and territorial ties, are linked to defense covenants with the United States.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The United States and South Korea last week said the biggest air maneuvers in their history.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Tension has risen gradually in the past two years in the region because of the acceleration of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic programs, which in September conducted a sixth nuclear test.[/ltr]
