WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called on Gulf states to maintain their unity and resolve differences after Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates cut off diplomatic ties with Qatar.
"We certainly encourage the parties to sit together and address these differences," Tillerson said on Monday from Sydney after meetings between defense and foreign ministers in the United States and Australia.
"I think it is important for the Gulf Cooperation Council to maintain its unity," he said.
The US secretary of state said he did not expect the Saudi, Egyptian, UAE and Bahrain decisions to sever relations with Qatar to affect the fight against the terrorist organization. "I do not expect this to affect the war on terror in the region, Globally ".
Qatar's relations with its neighbors deteriorated last month, with Qatar's official QNA news agency reporting to Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad not in line with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) policy on the Iranian position, later denied by the agency on the grounds that its account had been breached. / A.43
