    Baghdad Today - Erbil
Kurdish politician Latif Al-Sheikh confirmed today, Tuesday (November 26, 2024), that despite the Kurdistan Region Presidency setting next Monday as the date for the first session of the Kurdistan Parliament, there are no indications of a political consensus to distribute positions, including the Speaker of Parliament and his two deputies.
The sheikh said in an interview with "Baghdad Today" that "until now, no negotiations have been held to form the government, and the political situation is still stagnant, and there is no progress in the negotiations, and most likely the first session will remain open, headed by the oldest member, even though it is against the law."
He added, "It is not possible to resolve the differences and reach an agreement within 5 days, and there is no bloc that has the majority to name the Speaker of Parliament, as happened in 2018, when a member of the Democratic Party was chosen as Speaker of Parliament until consensus is reached."
According to the internal regulations of the Kurdistan Parliament, the first session of Parliament must be called within 10 days of the ratification of the election results. If the session is not called, parliamentarians have the right to hold it on the eleventh day following the ratification of the results.
In turn, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan revealed the latest developments in the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government after the final approval of the results of the regional parliament elections by the Independent High Electoral Commission .
The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ahmed Al-Harki, told Baghdad Today, Sunday (November 24, 2024), that "after the results were approved and the appeals were completed, the past period was devoted to preoccupation with the issue of the population census, but the actual dialogues will begin now, especially since most of the parties have formed negotiating committees to discuss with the other parties ."
He added, "It is better for the region to expedite the formation of the government in response to the demands of the masses and improve economic conditions, in addition to finding solutions to the crises. Baghdad is also looking for a strong partner supported by the legitimacy of the recent elections, at a time when the regional and international situation requires the rapid formation of the government ."
He explained that "the delay in forming governments has become a constant feature in the recent period, as the Iraqi government was formed in October 2022 after a year of political deadlock following the 2021 elections, and we do not rule out that the formation of the regional government will take a few months ."
The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan concluded by saying: “Despite this, it remains better for Kurdistan to accelerate the formation of the government and draw a future vision for governance, and benefit from past mistakes to improve government performance .”
