Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A one-year-old child died Monday in a refugee camp in Mosul due to the lack of sufficient food and medical supplies, a medical source was quoted saying.

According to the source, quoted by Almaalomah website, the child died at al-Khazer camp, east of Mosul, due food and medicine shortage. He added that several deaths among children occurred in the past period for the same reason.

Earlier this month, a lady and a child died of food poisoning after eating a spoiled meal in the same camp, which prompted the government to order an investigation.

The U.S.-backed Iraqi campaign against Islamic State militants in Mosul, now in its eighth month, has so far displaced at least 800.000 people.

More than four million Iraqis have been displaced since January 2014 coinciding with the emergence of the Islamic State militants.

Last week, the International Organization of Migration said children represented 55% of refugees in Mosul. Also this month, the United Nations children agency, UNICEF, said some 100.000 children remain in extreme danger at areas where battle are heating between Iraqi government forces and Islamic State militants.

We are receiving alarming reports of civilians including several children being killed in west Mosul,” said Peter Hawkins, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative in Iraq, in a statement, noting that boys and girls are being killed, injured and used as human shields as the fighting intensifies by the hour.
