More than 13 million people, including 5.6 million Syrians, need humanitarian aid in Syria, UN humanitarian chief Ursula Mueller said on Friday.
In a press conference held at the UN office in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, Müller said that the agreement on reducing tensions in Syria between Turkey, Russia and Iran "facilitated the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria."
Last September, at the Astana meeting, the Guarantor States (Russia-Turkey-Iran) reached an agreement to establish four tension-reduction zones in Syria, under which units of the three countries will be deployed to maintain security in certain areas of Syria.
"Civilians continue to face life-threatening risks due to the intensification of clashes that sometimes occur in the province of Deir Ghazur and the besieged areas, which is an important obstacle to the delivery of aid to those in need there," she said.
Many areas live under difficult humanitarian conditions. They are under siege, either by the Syrian government or by opposition factions. The most important of these is the eastern Ghouta, which is witnessing a deterioration in the humanitarian situation due to the scarcity of food and medical supplies. C
