US Secretary of Defense Jim Matisse said he respects the results of the recent legislative elections in Iraq, which won by the leader of the Sadrist movement Moqtada al-Sadr.

"The Iraqi people have held elections," Matisse told reporters at the Pentagon. It is a democratic process at a time when many people questioned that Iraq could take responsibility for itself. "

"We will wait for the results, the final results of the elections. We respect the decisions of the Iraqi people. "

State Department spokeswoman Heather Naort said the United States believed it could "continue" to establish "good relations" with the future Iraqi government.

The Pentagon said it was too early to know what election results could mean for US troops.

"We do not support any particular party or candidate, we support a fair and transparent process," said Pentagon spokesman Eric Bahon.

"We are ready to work with any person who has been elected with transparency by the Iraqi people."

"Many people in Iraq and other countries have concerns about Iran's influence in several different countries, and that is always a concern for us," Naort said.
