French giant Total plans to pull out of a $ 1 billion project to develop a natural gas field in Iran under new US sanctions.
Total said it would reduce its operations by November if the United States did not back down from the sanctions.
Washington has decided to re-impose tough sanctions on Iran after lifting it under a nuclear deal in 2015 to curb its nuclear ambitions.
German insurance company Allianz and Danish shipping company Maersk have announced they plan to cut their business in Iran.
Total signed a contract in 2017 to develop phase 11 of the South Pars gas field, with an initial investment of $ 1 billion.
"Total will not be able to continue with the Fares South 11 project and it must suspend all its associated operations before November 4, unless it receives an exemption from the US authorities, with the support of the French and European authorities," the company said in a statement.
After signing the nuclear deal with Iran three years ago and lifting the ban on it, companies began to invest in the country that was isolated.
These companies, which deal with energy, aviation and railway engineering, got initial deals, but are now in a state of confusion.
Last week, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran, calling him "decadent and corrupt," saying he was "embarrassing" for him as a "citizen."
He said he would re-impose economic sanctions lifted at the time of signing the agreement, ignoring the advice of his European allies.
As European governments continue to support a nuclear deal with Iran, companies operating internationally are at risk of violating the US embargo on Iran.
    "The situation will pass"
Total's announcement comes after Denmark's Maersk, which operates the world's oil tankers, says it will meet its commitments in Iran but will not sign any new contracts.
In turn, the Danish oil transport company "swelling" it will stop receiving any new requests from Iran.
Allianz said its business in Iran was "very limited," but while awaiting guidance from the European Union and the German government, it would cut its business there.
Total said it had spent less than $ 47 million on the Iranian project so far, adding that the withdrawal would not affect the company's production targets.
Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zangani said yesterday that "Tehran will overcome the pressure resulting from the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement."
"The current situation will pass and Iran will emerge as a winner."
