The Iranian riyal hit a record low against the US dollar in the informal market for the third day in a row, amid a deterioration in the economic situation and the re-imposition of sanctions by the United States.

Yesterday, Iranian free-market capital markets began to offer the dollar at a price of 170,000 riyals, before approaching around 185,000 riyals, in tandem with US President Donald Trump's harsh criticism of the regime's conduct.

The growing demand from Iranians to buy the dollar at 175,000 riyals yesterday claimed to surpass the 180,000 barrier, the government's election site said.

The riyal has lost about 75 percent of its value since the beginning of this year, according to Reuters.

The Iranian currency has been volatile for months because of weak economic and financial difficulties faced by local banks and strong demand for the dollar from Iranians who fear the shrinking of Iranian exports of oil and other goods after the withdrawal of Washington from the nuclear agreement in 2015 and re-impose sanctions on Tehran.

Iranian websites said yesterday that Iranian MPs staged a sit-in in front of the parliament's platform to protest the deteriorating economic situation.

"The protest comes because of the deterioration of the economic situation in the country as well as the attack that took place in Iran last Saturday," an Iranian official said.

US sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector begin in November.

Iranian President Hassan Rowhani said in his address to the UN General Assembly yesterday that the United States is waging an "economic war" on Iran by re-imposing unilateral sanctions.

The Iranian parliament sacked the minister of economic and financial affairs and labor minister in August in the latest change of senior officials on the economic file. In July, Rouhani appointed a new governor of the central bank.

In December, protests broke out over Iran's difficult economic situation and spread to more than 80 cities and towns, killing 25 people.

In the meantime, the city of Isfahan yesterday witnessed a protest rally organized by farmers against water shortage and "delayed promises on water insurance to compensate for the shortage of the Rhode Rhode," according to the ISNA government agency.

The government's plan to divert the river to the provinces of Yazd and Kerman faces widespread criticism in the province.

Over the past year, Isfahan has witnessed several strikes and protests by farmers because of water shortages.

Several Iranian regions are protesting against river diversion projects between provinces. The Khatam al-Anbiya Group, the economic and construction arm of the Guards, is implementing a project to build dams and tunnels to divert rivers from the provinces of western Iran (Kurdistan - Ahvaz - Lurstan) to Isfahan and Qom.
