    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Monday (May 6, 2024), the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee revealed the reason for Iraq’s failure to advance the gas file by modernizing production lines and stopping burning over the past years.
Committee member Ali Saadoun told “Baghdad Today” that “over the past years there has been no real will, whether governmental or political, to develop Iraq’s gas file, through production lines, stop burning it with most oil rights, reach self-sufficiency, and stop importing gas to operate stations.” electricity".
Saadoun stated, “There is real government interest during the current period in the gas file, and there is an effort to develop this file and reach self-sufficiency during the next three years, and work is being done for that, and there are agreements with international companies in this regard through licensing rounds,” noting that “ Completing this file, which has been stalled for years, will have many great economic benefits for the Iraqi situation.”
In recent years, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil has made efforts to activate licensing contracts with foreign companies to reach the production of one billion cubic feet with the aim of securing the requirements for electric energy production and stopping gas burning operations to reduce its environmental risks and benefit from it financially.
Experts say that Iraq has been wasting huge amounts of gas associated with oil production operations for decades due to the lack of facilities to process it and convert it into fuel for local consumption or export.
Estimates of the Ministry of Oil indicate that Iraq has reserves estimated at about 132 trillion cubic feet of gas, and that associated gas represents 70 percent of it.
Official statistics show that the second largest oil producer in OPEC after Saudi Arabia currently processes about 1.5 billion standard cubic feet per day of associated gas, that is, half of the quantities that are emitted daily of this substance.
Three years ago, the Ministry of Oil pledged that by the end of 2024, gas burning in the southern fields would decrease by 90 percent, but since then Iraq has increased by only 5 percent the processed quantities of associated gas.
