BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday that his country refuses to "abandon the option of using military force" to restore Taiwan to its sovereignty, stressing that "reunification" of the island and Chinese mainland is ultimately inevitable.
In a speech, Xi said China "reserves the right to take all necessary measures" against the "outside powers" intervening to prevent the peaceful reunification of the country, as well as against the activities of separatist and independence advocates on the island.
The Chinese president said no one could change the fact that Taiwan is part of China and that people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits should strive for "reunification".
The Chinese president made the remarks in a speech marking the 40th anniversary of a major political statement that will eventually lead to a warmer relationship with the autonomous island of Taiwan.Ending / 25
