In a Western deal, a city in New Jersey agreed to pay $ 27 million to rent a property, which it sold two years ago for only $ 1, raising many questions.
The state-owned ING said Thursday that the lease allows the New York City council to take advantage of the property for 30 years for $ 27 million.
The deal surprised residents and even a number of city council members who agreed with a slight majority to pass the deal. Some questioned why the property was not kept, instead of selling it to a company, the municipal council returned to lease it.
"Today we pay them for something we have given them in the past," said Debra Sulzer, a resident of the city, during the signing ceremony.
In 2017, the Newark Local Council sold the property to Newark Ark, a private company, for just $ 1. The property includes parking for 258 cars and a building with offices.
Newark Ark, which has become the owner of the property, is seeking to invest the above-ground plot in the construction of new offices, retail outlets and a cafe, as well as increasing existing parking spaces by adding a new building for cars.
Of course, the city council of the US city of New Jersey would benefit from the property, but that would be governed by a time limit, which would then be owned by the company.
