"Iran was expected to attack American sites in a country other than Iraq, as Tehran is counting on some powerful allies," the senior US official, who asked for support to be identified, told Reuters.
Tehran launched a missile attack on two bases in Iraq in response to the assassination of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in a US air strike at Baghdad International Airport.
The US military has deployed Patriot air defenses in other locations in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, to drop any Iranian missiles, but it does not have those capabilities at the Assad Air Force Base in Iraq, which was targeted by at least 11 ballistic missiles launched by Iran on Wednesday.
