    Baghdad - IQ / Adel Al-Mukhtar

Suicides among young people in Iraq have increased in an alarming way, due to economic, social and psychological factors.
In the past year alone, 644 suicides have been recorded, most of them in Baghdad. The reason, according to specialists, is "disappointments", widespread unemployment, lack of services, and the difficulty in obtaining adequate housing.
    There are many reasons
A member of the High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq, Dr. Ali Al-Bayati, confirmed to IQ NEWS , that the reasons that led to the increase in suicides began to be economic, especially last year, where we witnessed an economic recession that affected a third of the country's population, or the equivalent of 14 million citizens, as a result of the drop in oil prices and measures The home ban that led to a large number of earners losing their jobs, in view of the absence of measures to support citizens, especially the affected groups.
Al-Bayati says, "The social aspect has also affected through the lack of movement and friction inside homes in poor areas and those who suffer from economic problems that have resulted in psychological problems in the absence of social and psychological solutions that are supposed to be presented by government institutions in addition to projects supported by civil society organizations." ", Indicating that" the absence of the role of these organizations in providing social and psychological counseling to reduce the burden of psychological pressure on young people in such circumstances has led some young people to this stage of despair and consequently to suicide, as well as the program that deals with such kind of individuals. "
Al-Bayati believes, "The solutions lie in taking the issue into consideration by state institutions and decision-makers, and there must be quick interventions and economic and financial support for these classes through financial grants and food baskets, and the provision of social and psychological solutions by governmental institutions and local organizations with the support of organizations." International and donor agencies, and the development of the psychiatric sector, which suffers a lot, whether at the level of infrastructure or the lack of staff, and all of these policies and steps can address suicides, as well as create clear mechanisms for youth work through cultural educational training programs provided by relevant institutions such as my ministries Youth as well as education. "
Rampant unemployment and the rule of traditions
Psychologist Professor Qassem Hussein Salih confirms to  IQ NEWS that the traditional causes of suicide are united by three, the first of which is the widespread unemployment in the youth sector, then the deterioration of social and economic conditions, as well as backward social customs and traditions.
Saleh, founder and president of the Iraqi Psychological Association, says, "What happened in Iraq after the change in 2003 led to the emergence of new reasons for suicide, including the succession of disappointments, and because patience has limits, some of those who ran out of patience deliberately committed suicide as the last solution to their problems, in addition to feeling vulnerable." And remorse, as some youth have a comparison between his person, his abilities and his values and with others who occupied positions in state institutions of less experience, competence and values, accompanied by a feeling of remorse for wasting the opportunity, so he punishes himself by killing it, indicating that "depression, despair and access to a state of disability are among the other factors that raised Rates of suicide, as the individual finds that reality does not provide him with a solution to his problem, then he resorts to ending his life with a bullet or drowning poison or cutting an artery. "
Saleh explains, "The reason for all this is the failure of the authority in Iraq and its monopoly with wealth. What happened was that the political class isolated itself with ten square kilometers to live a luxurious life and let people live a life of hell."
Possible projects to support young people
The economist, Malaz Al-Amin, says to  IQ NEWS , "The state should seriously think about supporting small projects for young people, such as workshops, cottage industries, simple agriculture, transportation projects and other low-cost projects. It must also enact laws and take measures to facilitate the establishment of these simple economic units in addition to Granting loans and banking facilities to develop them, "indicating that" these steps open new doors for work and encourage young people to think of other projects for work and legitimate earning. "
Al-Amin continues, "If the state has the ability to establish huge projects such as factories, large residential complexes or agricultural production projects, then it must take the initiative in that because these projects provide thousands of job opportunities for all disciplines, and if it does not have the financial capacity, it can present huge opportunities for foreign investment or "The interior ministry, through which spaces are opened for the work of unemployed youth. All these steps contribute to the youth’s involvement in the labor market and thinking about sustaining their lives and providing livelihoods for their families.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights announced the registration of 644 suicides during the past year, most of them in Baghdad, Basra, Dhi Qar and Nineveh, by multiple means, including shooting, hanging and falling from high places, as well as by burning and using toxic materials.
The Commission stated that the motives for suicide varied between social, psychological and economic reasons, in addition to the poverty factor, the repercussions of wars and the deterioration of human rights.
