The Minister of Transport, Nasser Hussein Al-Shibli, confirmed, on Wednesday,
that the Iraqi airspace is managed by the Air Navigation Company and with Iraqi staff, revealing that there are pressures to return the British Serco Company.
Al-Shibli said in an interview followed by Al-Iqtisad News, “The Iraqi Air Navigation Company is the one who manages the Iraqi airspace from 1-1-2021, after years of joint work with the British Serco Company, as the Air Navigation Company is able to manage the Iraqi airspace with Iraqi staff. ", Indicating that" Serco Company contracted with the Ministry in 2014 to provide training and monitoring services. Now we have 270 air traffic controllers currently and we have a safe and controlled atmosphere with radars. "
He added, “The Air Navigation Company was a subordinate division to the Civil Aviation Authority, but now in a company that includes a board of directors, which in turn pledged to manage the airspace, and sees no need for the services of the aforementioned company, but there are great pressures to return Serco's work to air control again “.
Al-Shibli pointed out that "the ministry authorized the Air Navigation Company to make the decision about its desire to re-contract with Serco to work again or not, as it is a self-financing company. We hope that the dispute will be resolved soon on the issue of the long-term partnership and the short-term contract."
He explained that "the ministry is facing a problem, which is that the Air Navigation Company had signed a partnership contract in 2018 for a period of 15 years, and there are parliamentary and executive bodies in the government who believe that the agreement signed with the company may have financial consequences for the air navigation company."
He revealed "the sums that were spent on foreign companies to monitor the Iraqi airspace, ranging between two million and 400 thousand dollars to three million dollars a month." Good and provide that amount to support and finance self-financing companies in the ministry.
He pointed out that "the number of aircraft that pass through Iraqi airspace reaches 320 aircraft per day, with a value of $ 450 per plane," explaining that "this is a good revenue for the Iraqi Air Navigation Company, and there is also a contract signed earlier with the International Air Transport Association (IATA). ) To collect these revenues and we are now in the process of taking a decision regarding the continuation of the business contract with the International Air Transport Association or authorizing the air traffic control to collect the amounts.
