The Pentagon confirmed continuing to support the Iraqi government in confronting ISIS
The Pentagon spokesman, John Kirby, confirmed, on Tuesday, that the United States is continuing technical talks with Baghdad regarding the future of the American presence, two days after holding early elections in Iraq.
Kirby said that the United States does not want to see an increase in violence in Iraq or attacks or threats to its forces there as a result of the elections or for any other reason, adding that it continues to support the Iraqi government in the face of ISIS.
He added that the US forces in Iraq still retain the ability and the right to self-defense against any attacks against them.
Kirby stressed that the United States is still waiting for the election result to be ratified, and "hopes that the new House of Representatives will form a government that reflects the will of the Iraqi people, and works to address human rights, security, and economic challenges in Iraq."
And the American newspaper, “The Wall Street Journal”, said that the Iraqi vote in the parliamentary elections that took place, Sunday, “may determine the future of the American forces that are still stationed there,” and will indicate that its results will reveal “how Baghdad will deal with a geopolitical conflict between Washington and Tehran.” .
The Iraqi elections came in the wake of an agreement between Baghdad and Washington to “end combat operations” for the remaining US forces and turn them into advisory missions.
The preliminary results announced by the Elections Commission in Iraq indicate the consolidation of the political strength of the Sadrist movement led by Shiite religious leader Muqtada al-Sadr, in return for a relatively large strengthening of the strength of his historical opponent, the “State of Law Coalition” led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, and a massive decline in the representation of armed militias (Alliance). Fatah) led by Hadi al-Amiri, and the coalition of the so-called “state forces” consisting of the victory coalition led by former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, and the Wisdom Movement headed by Ammar al-Hakim.
