Unprecedentedly, dozens of poultry farms for breeding red laying hens began to sell what they had at reduced prices to avoid bankruptcy after a major setback following an unprecedented rise in feed, by up to 40%.
Abdul Karim Al-Majma’i, the owner of a poultry field, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that:
“The red bankruptcy hit more than 200 fields in Diyala due to the increase in feed prices by 40%, which led to a rise in production costs by up to 50%, meaning that we lose daily from 200-300 thousand dinars.”
Al-Majma'i added, "These conditions forced me to take a decision to sell my red chicken to avoid bankruptcy, especially since its losses amounted to 7 million during this May."
For his part, a member of the Poultry Fields Association, Muhammad al-Jubouri, stated that "the sale of red chicken comes to reduce losses, especially since the poultry sector was not supported by the government, and imports are flooding the markets without any balance with the national product."
Al-Jubouri added, "Dozens of poultry fields for red chicken will not be able to compete with the increase in feed prices at large rates, in addition to the weakness of the government's tools to control prices amid the monopoly of traders and feed companies."
In addition, Shaker Hassan, a chicken dealer, spoke about buying three shipments of red chicken in order to sell them at special discounted prices, stressing that “the feed file increased material losses for the owners of the fields, especially in this May.”
Hussein continued, "Indications are that 20 to 30% of red chickens in Diyala will be sold this May, and the percentage may reach more than 50% in July," stressing that "the high production costs will lead to a halt in the pumping of table eggs within weeks.
