    Baghdad / Al-Mawrid News
Today, Sunday, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities counted the artifacts recovered within 18 months, while it indicated that complaints had been submitted to Interpol against a number of countries to put pressure on them in the file of antiquities recovery.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Ahmed Al-Olaywi, said, according to the official agency, that "the ministry recovered 17,338 artifacts from abroad, during one meal, as part of its plan in place during a year and a half," noting that "this number is the largest in recovery operations and in the history of work." The General Authority for Heritage Antiquities in Iraq, in addition to the recovery of the canvas and the Sumerian ram, which dates back to 3500 BC.
He added that "there is a group of recovery operations from foreign countries registered with the ministry, as some of these pieces were museum pieces stolen for years, and some were extracted by random excavation, which is the major problem facing the ministry."
And about the random exhumation, between Al-Alawi, that “random exhumation in remote areas on the outskirts of the country has caused the removal of large quantities of antiquities outside the country, as the ministry is currently working to return them and there is cooperation from some countries in this field, which is matched by the lack of cooperation from Other countries," noting that "the ministry has high coordination with the Iraqi Foreign Ministry and Iraqi embassies to work to restore these pieces legally."

He revealed, "Iraq has submitted a complaint to the International Interpol against some countries for the purpose of pressuring them to restore and return the antiquities," stressing that "the file is ongoing and has excellent achievements in favor of Iraqi antiquities."
Regarding the officially registered sites and the treatment of indiscriminate excavation, Al-Alawi confirmed that "Iraq owns 15,000 registered archaeological sites, and the unregistered sites double that number," noting that "some residents of remote areas, in cooperation with thieves, are excavating these areas and extracting what can be extracted." They smuggle it and sell it.
He continued, "The file of protection for these sites should be handled by the Ministries of Defense and Interior, in cooperation with citizens to prevent cases of smuggling."
And he indicated that "there are strict laws that carry the death penalty for smugglers of antiquities."
